Barcelona showcased an impressive performance at the NouCamp on Wednesday evening, dominating Borussia Dortmund with a resounding 4-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal clash.
Throughout the match, the Catalan powerhouse maintained complete dominance, thanks to Robert Lewandowski netting two goals which secured their commanding win.
The match began at a fast pace as Barcelona quickly applied pressure to Borussia Dortmund. Within moments of kickoff, 16-year-old phenom Lamine Yamal challenged Dortmund’s goalkeeper Gregor Kobel two times; initially, he sent a low strike which Kobel managed to save effectively before Yamal fired another strong effort that just grazed the left post.
It wasn't long before Barcelona managed to break through. In the 25th minute, Pau Cubarsi delivered an accurate pass into the box to Raphinha, who did not miss his chance and scored easily, giving Barcelona a 1-0 advantage.
The objective was temporarily reviewed by VAR for possible offside, but it was validated as valid following an anxious wait. The Nou Camp burst into celebration as the team rejoiced.
Dortmund had several opportunities, particularly with Carney Chukwuemeka and Jamie Gittens leading the charge, but their attempts were consistently thwarted or stopped by Barcelona’s outstanding goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who put up an impressive performance.
Just before the break, Serhou Guirassy had an opportunity to equalize, but his shot went just wide of the target, leaving Dortmund frustrated.
In the latter part of the match, Barcelona maintained their intense pressure. At the 48-minute mark, Lewandowski extended Barcelona's advantage by powering a well-placed header off a cross from Raphinha, making the score 2-0.
Despite Dortmund’s attempts to mount a comeback, their attacks consistently met with stiff resistance from Barcelona’s robust defense.
Fermin Lopez, who played a crucial role in the buildup, narrowly missed out on scoring. In the 63rd minute, his attempt from just outside the penalty area hit the post, and shortly after, another one of his shots was thwarted on the goal line.
However, the third goal followed shortly thereafter. In the 66th minute, Lopez was instrumental in assisting Lewandowski, who coolly placed the ball into the lower right corner past Kobel, making the score 3-0.
As Dortmund's frustration mounted due to their inability to breach Barcelona's defense, their prospects took another hit in the 77th minute.
Yamal, who had been a constant threat, finished off a brilliant counter-attack with a first-time shot from mid-range, making it 4-0 and all but sealing the win for Barcelona.
Dortmund's last opportunity arose in the 84th minute when Niklas Sule believed he had found the net following a corner kick; however, Szczesny made an impressive save to prevent the goal. During the closing moments of the game, Giovanni Reyna attempted to equalize, yet his attempt was thwarted. Similarly, Julian Brandt's follow-up effort also hit a roadblock.
