The Moroccan winger Bilal Ould-Chikh, playing for FC Volendam, has spoken out about enduring racism from spectators despite his crucial contributions during matches. He shared these thoughts in an interview with NU.nl , cited by Voetbalprimeur The ex-Morocco U20 player spoke about the appalling harassment he has faced this season. While playing an away game against FC Den Bosch, he allegedly heard himself being referred to as a "cancerous Muslim."
The individual, who is 27 years old, mentioned experiencing "a sense of systemic exclusion" related to his background. Due to these factors, he stated that he is contemplating moving to Morocco once his athletic career concludes.
Recently, Ould-Chikh has been shining with Volendam in the Eredivisie, particularly during a match on Monday evening. However, in an interview, he stressed that "the focus should be on discussing discrimination," highlighting several instances that have significantly impacted him as an athlete. Only last month, he brought attention to experiencing racist conduct from certain fans. Although the club released a statement then stating they wouldn’t return to this issue, Ould-Chikh maintains that these events were “far too impactful” to overlook.
I can’t describe why I’m treated more harshly compared to others, aside from my background," he stated. "Throughout the conversation, I stayed courteous. However, individuals should understand the extent of discrimination and racism I have faced over the past few years.
As he mentioned, such occurrences "take place all over—the list includes ADO Den Haag, FC Den Bosch...". Recalling his past achievements from last season with Emmen, where he netted the decisive goal, he noted how this memorable event was overshadowed by a racially charged comment. “Following that game, an elderly gentleman approached me stating, 'Good job on the goal, yet it’s unfortunate for someone of your background to have scored it,'” he recounted.
Ould-Chikh refers to the constant verbal harassment as a "trauma." He stated, "I have always felt like an outsider." After his career ends, he plans to relocate to Morocco, where he feels more at ease compared to living in the Netherlands.
