Mullanpur (Punjab), India - On April 15 (ANI report): One of the most astounding achievements was witnessed here: Indian Premier League (IPL) history, Punjab Kings (PBKS) achieved an impressive 16-run win against the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a low-scoring thriller at Mullanpur in the IPL 2025 season. The match will be remembered for PBKS successfully defending the lowest total ever in the league's history -- 111 runs.
Following their dismissal for only 111 runs in 15.3 overs, the odds were significantly against Punjab. Nonetheless, their bowlers, spearheaded by Yuzvendra Chahal And Marco Jansen flipped the game as KKR were bowled out for only 95 runs in 15.1 overs. The smallest total previously defended in the IPL was 116/9 by Chennai Super Kings versus Punjab Kings in 2009 in Durban
KKR's pursuit began poorly as they lost their first two wickets after scoring only seven runs. Quinton de Kock scored 2 runs, followed by Sunil Narine getting out for 5. Captain Ajinkya Rahane and young player Angkrish Raghuvanshi attempted to stabilize the innings with a stand of 55 runs, however, Chahal disrupted this when he dismissed Rahane for 17.
Raghuvanshi showed promise with his 37 runs off 28 balls, but once he was bowled out by Chahal, the downfall started. Glenn Maxwell sent back Venkatesh Iyer for just 7 runs, and then Chahal came back to stump Rinku Singh for 2. In the following delivery, Chahal got rid of Ramandeep Singh without scoring, shifting the advantage towards Punjab.
KKR's tail did not provide much resistance. Earlier, Harshit Rana had shown promise with his bowling, but he was sent back for just a few runs when the team was struggling at 79/8. Vaibhav Arora was skillfully outmaneuvered by Arshdeep Singh and failed to score. Despite this, Andre Russell attempted an aggressive approach, scoring 17 off 11 balls, before being caught by Jansen as the final wicket fell.
Each Punjab bowler played a part in securing this outstanding victory. Chahar was particularly impressive, taking 4/28, followed by Jansen who claimed 3/17. Additionally, Xavier Bartlett, Arshdeep Singh, and Maxwell each added one wicket to their tally.
This remarkable outcome not only handed Punjab Kings a morale-boosting victory that also inscribed their names in IPL history.
Initially, PBKS secured the win during the coin toss and decided to bat first. Priyansh Arya (scoring 22 runs off 12 deliveries, including three boundaries and one maximum) and Prabhsimran Singh (accumulating 30 runs in 15 balls, featuring two boundaries and three sixes) provided a scorching beginning to PBKS’s innings with their partnership worth 39 runs. Nevertheless, Harshit Rana's (taking 3 wickets for 25 runs) powerful opening spell along with impressive fielding efforts from Ramandeep Singh led them to reach 54/4 by the conclusion of the powerplay. Later, Sunil Narine (securing 2 wickets for just 14 runs) and Varun Chakravarthy (claiming 2 wickets conceding only 21 runs) controlled the latter part of the batting order, preventing PBKS batsmen from settling down as they eventually dismissed PBKS for 111 all out after 15.3 overs.
PBKS are at the fourth spot, with four wins and two losses, with eight points. KKR are at the sixth spot, with three wins and four losses, giving them six points.
Brief score: Punjab Kings 111 scored in 15.3 overs (Prabhsimran Singh 30 runs, Priyansh Arya 22 runs; Harshit Rana took 3 wickets for 25 runs) versus Kolkata Knight Riders 95 in 15.1 (Angkrish Raghuvanshi 37, Andre Russell 17) Yuzvendra Chahal 4/28)(ANI)
