The The Nigeria Boxing Federation has declared the implementation of the recently sanctioned World Boxing weight classes for the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival set to take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In an advisory notice sent out to all relevant parties, the federation stated clearly that being associated with the IOC-recognized body World Boxing obligates them to adhere to the statutes and rules set forth by the international governing organization.
"This notification aims to clarify that the Nigeria Boxing Federation, being affiliated with the internationally recognized World Boxing under the IOC, must strictly adhere to the statutes and rules set forth by the International Federation," stated the advisory document.
The clarification comes after several state coaches, including Niger State Boxing Head Coach Ismail Raji, expressed confusion over which weight categories would be used for the Sports Festival after presenting the two differing categories in a message directed to Secretary General Olalekan Faseesin.
"Could you please clarify which weight category table we should use for the upcoming NSFs in Ogun State, Sir? Most state coaches are uncertain since the registration portal will be opening soon," asked Coach Raji.
As of January 1, 2025, the updated weight classes for male competitors will include ten divisions spanning from Flyweight (47-50 kg) up to Super Heavyweight (over 90 kg). Similarly, female participants will be divided into ten classifications starting with Light Flyweight (45-48 kg) and ending at Heavyweight (up to 80 kg).
The federation additionally directed all involved states to acquire their new Blue Cards from the NBF Secretariat as they get ready for the Sports Festival.
"Please be advised that this notice overrides all prior correspondence regarding this issue. Additionally, all involved countries are asked to acquire their new Blue Cards from the NBF Secretariat ahead of the 22nd National Sports Festival," the statement concluded.
For the Sports Festival, the competition structure permits every state to send one male boxer from each of the 13 men’s weight divisions and one female boxer from each of the 12 women’s classifications, capping participation at a total of 13 males and 12 females per region.
Faseesin, having endorsed the advisory, offered his phone number for additional queries, inviting all parties involved to get in touch with any concerns about the enforcement of the updated weight divisions.
As the registration website for the National Sports Festival is set to launch shortly, this explanation has been provided to make sure that every state prepares their boxers following the standardized weight divisions acknowledged by the international regulatory authority.
