On Sunday afternoon, MWOS FC coach Lloyd Mutasa was delighted as his team secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Herentals at Wadzanayi Stadium, placing them atop the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) standings.
The debutante team currently has 14 points, placing them one point above Ngezi Platinum, who holds the second spot with 13 points.
Referred to as "The Punters," MWOS remains unbeaten this season with four victories and two draws after six matches, making them the only team without a loss in the league so far.
The team's defense has been so steadfast that they have allowed just one goal all season, a feat that their head coach finds impressive.
We're quite pleased with how solid our defense has been. It’s clear that strong teams rely heavily on their defensive capabilities. Even when we have an off day and can’t manage to score, having this reliable backline means we’re unlikely to end up losing the game.
"These are precisely the activities my sons are engaged in, and I'm quite pleased about it," stated Mutasa.
MWOS received a delayed promotion into the league following their acquisition of ZPC Hwange's franchise in January.
The team backed by Norton retained most of their players from the roster that competed in the Northern Region Division One League. They missed out on securing a promotion spot after ending up as runners-up to Scotland FC.
Even with restricted pre-season practice, MWOS FC’s coach thinks that their strong team cohesion is responsible for their solid beginning in the league.
I believe collaborating as a unit has assisted us; we've been battling alongside one another.
"I've observed significant cooperation among these young players, and their determination will lead to positive outcomes, which is what we aim for in every single match," Mutasa further stated.
MWOS is currently utilizing Baobab Stadium in Mhondoro-Ngezi as their temporary home field but plans to relocate to Ngoni Stadium in Norton shortly.
