Hamilton Escapes Penalty After Blocking Albon in FP2

Lewis Hamilton Has managed to escape any penalty despite being summoned by the stewards following an obstruction of Alexander Albon during the second free practice session at the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Albon first categorized the placement of Hamilton as Ferrari “dangerous” as the Williams The driver arrived at Turn 12, prompting the stewards to call upon the seven-time world champion following the conclusion of the session.

After conversing with both drivers and examining the pertinent data, the four stewards concluded that no additional actions were necessary regarding Hamilton.

"The stewards received testimony from the driver of Car 44 (Lewis Hamilton), the driver of Car 23 (Alexander Albon), as well as input from their respective teams. They examined various pieces of evidence including position records, marshaling systems data, videos, timing logs, telemetry information, team communications, and onboard footage. Based on these inputs, they concluded that Car 44 (driven by Lewis Hamilton) unjustifiably obstructed Car 23 (piloted by Alexander Albon) during Practice 2 when navigating Turn 17," stated the official report from the stewards.

Nevertheless, consistent with what we agreed upon with the teams, no penalties will be imposed for blocking during free practices unless it can be deemed hazardous. In the course of the discussion, the racer from Car 23 asserted that they maintained full command over their vehicle throughout and although they were obstructed, they didn’t view the scenario as perilous.

He had noticed Car 44 ahead of him through the previous bend. Nevertheless, he didn’t anticipate finding Car 44 where it was on the circuit, which startled the racer driving Car 23 as they neared Turn 17 and prompted them to maneuver to avoid collision.

“While his immediate reaction when the incident occurred was to say that it was dangerous, having looked at it subsequently, he agreed that it was not. We accordingly took no further action.”

Hamilton recorded the 13th quickest time during the session, whereas Albon secured the 10th position for Williams, ahead of his teammate. Carlos Sainz Fifth place was a solid start for the Grove team over the course of the race weekend.

Regarding the Albon blocking situation following FP2, Williams team boss James Vowles shared with Sky Sports F1: "Certain sections of the circuit present challenges; particularly from Turn 5 through Turn 8, drivers are essentially blind, at full speed, leaving them with limited options."

You can take off; that's pretty much all you can do. Braking isn't possible at this point. This is actually what led to the issue. It wasn't deliberate on Ferrari's part, but let's aim to improve this situation since we definitely don't want an incident.
