Bangladesh Reinstates "Except Israel" Clause on Passports, Sparking International Attention

Bangladesh, which has a Muslim majority, does not recognize Israel. The exception for Israel was omitted in 2021 during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s time in office.

Bangladesh Has reinstated an "excluding Israel" notation on passports, as per local media reports on Sunday, thereby restricting its residents from visiting that nation.

In Muslim-majority Bangladesh, where Israel is not recognized, the country views it as a contentious topic.

The statement "applicable in all nations apart from Israel," which had been featured on Bangladeshi passports for many years, was eliminated towards the end of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration. She was defeated in August.

Nilima Afroze, a deputy secretary from the home ministry, informed the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency on Sunday that authorities had issued a directive the previous week to reinstate the inscription.

"The Director General of the Immigration and Passport Department was instructed to undertake the required actions for implementing this alteration," according to The Daily Star quoting Afroze on Sunday.

In 2021, the phrase "except Israel" was omitted from passports; however, the government led by Hasina at the time emphasized that this change did not alter their country's position regarding Israel.

On Saturday, approximately 100,000 individuals convened in Dhaka, demonstrating their backing for an autonomous Palestinian state as a show of solidarity with Gaza.

The Gaza war erupted following Hamas's assault in October 2023 Israel This led to the fatalities of 1,218 individuals, primarily civilians, as per a count derived from official Israeli data.

Last month, a tenuous truce between the conflicting sides collapsed. On Sunday, Gaza’s health ministry reported that at least 1,574 Palestinians have lost their lives since then, raising the total fatality count from the start of the conflict to 50,944.
