In a spectacular encounter on Tuesday night, Borussia Dortmund secured a compelling 3–1 win against Barcelona during the Champions League knockout round’s second leg. However, this triumph wasn’t sufficient to overcome the disadvantage from the initial match, with Barcelona advancing overall due to a 5–3 aggregate score.
The outstanding player was Serhou Guirassy, who scored three goals to reignite Dortmund's hopes in front of their supporters at home.
In the 11th minute, he broke the deadlock with a penalty kick following a foul within the penalty area.
Dortmund kept up the pressure and were rewarded once more at the beginning of the second half when Guirassy extended their advantage in the 49th minute with a precisely placed shot after receiving assistance from Ramy Bensebaini.
Nevertheless, Bensebaini found himself implicated at the opposite end just five minutes later as he accidentally directed the ball into his own net in the 54th minute, granting Barcelona an important away goal and alleviating the stress on the visiting team.
Felix Nmecha of Dortmund was shown a yellow card soon after, in the 56th minute, as tensions rose.
Guirassy scored his third goal in the 76th minute, reinstating Dortmund's two-goal cushion for the evening; however, Barcelona maintained their overall lead, ensuring they advanced to the next round.
Even though they won this match, Borussia Dortmund was eliminated from the tournament after losing 5-3 overall, whereas Barcelona advanced as their strong performance in the first leg proved sufficient to handle Dortmund’s late push.
