To everyone’s astonishment,Team Bayelsa clinched the title of overall champions at the first ever Niger Delta Sports Festival, narrowly defeating established strongholdsDeltaandEdostatesin an exciting competition staged inUyo,thecapitalofAkwaIbomState.
The seven-day festival, supported by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), brought together athletes from all nine Niger Delta states who competed in various events. The event was marked by intense competitions, remarkable skills, and thrilling conclusions—especially the nail-biting gold medal contest between teams from Bayelsa and Delta.
At the end of the competition, Bayelsa topped the medal table with 42 gold, 29 silver, and 15 bronze medals, totaling 86 medals. Just one gold medal separated them from Delta State, which finished a close second with 41 gold, 26 silver, and 32 bronze - the highest overall medal count at 99.
Edo State claimed the third spot with 23 gold, 35 silver, and 31 bronze medals, totaling 89 awards. In fourth place was Rivers State, which won 63 medals overall (comprising 21 gold, 16 silver, and 26 bronze). Ondo took the fifth position with 43 medals. The hosts, Akwa Ibom, ranked sixth with 37 medals, followed by Abia in seventh place with 32 medals, Imo in eighth with 42 medals, and Cross River finishing last with 31 medals.
The success achieved by Bayelsa is anticipated to boost sports development throughout the region. The Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, commended the athletes, highlighting their perseverance and crediting their achievement to both their resolve and backing from the state administration. He emphasized that this accomplishment will set the stage for Bayelsa’s readiness as they prepare for the national sporting event ‘Gateway 2025,’ scheduled to take place in Ogun State between May 16th and 30th.
The Vice Chairman of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association, Dr. Kolawole Oredipe, similarly conveyed his pride in the squad’s achievements, noting this as evidence that the region is advancing considerably in nurturing new talent. He highlighted that the Niger Delta Sports Festival acted as an essential training platform leading up to the forthcoming national competition.
The inaugural festival's triumph has generated enthusiasm and increased expectations for more significant accomplishments in upcoming events, as there is an increasing demand for the subsequent gathering to capitalize on the progress and heritage set in Uyo.
