In Mullanpur (Punjab) [India] on April 16 (ANI), after leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) to victory against the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), captain Shreyas Iyer emphasized his squad’s aggressive approach and strategic field placements. He also stressed the significance of maintaining composure despite these wins so as not to become overly elated.
After experiencing a shift in fortune, Iyer found himself leading KKR following PBKS chasing down 262 runs at Kolkata last year—the highest ever T20 chase. Now, he stood proudly once again, this time as the captain of PBKS, having successfully defended the smallest score in IPL history during their match at Mullanpur on Tuesday.
After the game at the post-match ceremony, Iyer stated, "Words can hardly convey what I feel. I simply trusted my intuition. Seeing the ball spin slightly, I advised Yuzi to regulate his breath. An aggressive approach with the suitable individuals in position proved crucial. Right now, speaking seems challenging, yet these victories hold extra significance."
Iyer mentioned that the bounce on the pitch was inconsistent.
When I stepped up to bat, I encountered two distinct scenarios: some deliveries dipped unexpectedly, while others struck the lower part of my bat, making sweeping challenging. The pitch exhibited inconsistent bounces throughout. Honestly, considering our victory margin of just 16 runs, we managed to post a respectable score. This uneven bounce factored into our strategy; we reminded our bowlers about it, and they successfully implemented their plan.
"In just two overs, we claimed two wickets which shifted the momentum in our favor. The new batsmen who entered tried to seize control but failed. Seeing Yuzi bowl effectively and spin the ball boosted our confidence significantly. I aimed for an aggressive field placement close to the bat to induce errors from the opposition. This strategy helped swing the game in our direction. However, it’s crucial that we remain grounded despite this victory. We should carry forward the positive aspects displayed today into our upcoming match and aim to dominate right from the first delivery," he added.
In the game, PBKS secured the win during the coin toss and decided to bat initially. Priyansh Arya (scoring 22 runs off 12 deliveries including four boundaries and one maximum) along with Prabhsimran Singh (accumulating 30 runs in 15 balls featuring two fours and three sixes) provided an explosive beginning to PBKS’s innings through their partnership worth 39 runs. Nonetheless, a strong opening spell executed by Harshit Rana (taking 3 wickets conceding 25 runs) coupled with impressive ground fielding from Ramandeep Singh reduced them to 54/4 as they concluded the power play phase. Later, performances by Sunil Narine (claiming 2 wickets giving away just 14 runs) and Varun Chakravarthy (securing 2 wickets costing him only 21 runs) controlled the middle part of the batting lineup, preventing PBKS batsmen from settling down which led to PBKS being all-out for 111 runs within 15.3 overs.
During the chase, the PBKS bowlers showcased an impressive performance. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (4/28) and left-arm pacer Marco Jansen (3/17) delivered crucial spells that dramatically changed the course of the game. Although Angkrish Raghuvanshi (37 off 28 balls, including five boundaries and one maximum) and Andre Russell (17 off 11 balls, featuring one boundary and two sixes) tried their best with some valiant batting, KKR was dismissed for just 95 runs in 15.1 overs, ultimately losing by 16 runs.
PBKS stands at the fourth position, boasting four victories and two defeats, accumulating eight points. In contrast, KKR sits at the sixth place, having secured three wins against four losses, which amounts to six points. (ANI)
