The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has temporarily banned Jasper Benfelix, who leads Wologizi FC as their head coach, along with four referees from participating in any events sanctioned by the LFA. This suspension remains effective until the conclusion of ongoing investigations regarding accusations of match fixing.
Coach Benfelix, who recently guided Wologizi FC to victory in the Second Division championship, is under investigation after a contentious post was made in a WhatsApp chat. The message purportedly claimed that he expressed willingness to take actions to assist his previous team, Nimba Kwado, evade demotion should the opportunity arise.
Shortly after the post circulated, Wologizi FC forfeited a crucial match against Nimba Kwado, enabling the latter to escape the relegation zone. The suspicious circumstances surrounding the forfeit have raised concerns, and Wologizi FC has also been referred to the LFA Disciplinary Committee for further review.
Although the LFA hasn't revealed all the specifics, an announcement from the organization stated that the suspension is a preventive step and doesn’t suggest culpability.
"As stated in their announcement, this choice aligns with the LFA’s dedication to uphold the sport's integrity,” the release noted. “They consider these accusations with utmost seriousness and will implement appropriate measures to guarantee that equity and openness continue to be central principles within Liberian football.”
As part of connected events, the LFA has temporarily halted the services of four referees—Koffa Doe, Thomas N. Konah, Julius Pongay, and Emmanuel Tarley—as of now. These officials are currently being looked into regarding suspected participation in match fixing and have been prohibited from engaging in any LFA-associated functions until the investigation wraps up.
The LFA reaffirmed its complete collaboration with the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee and pledged to maintain standards of honesty and responsibility at every tier of the sport.
