Ethiopian Streets Heat Up: Racing to Revive the Local Sportswear Scene

ADDIS ABABA – The forthcoming "Made in Ethiopia" 10 km street race has been meticulously planned to boost the expanding domestic sports apparel manufacturing sector and highlight its increasing production capacities.

The "Made in Ethiopia Run 2025" event, organized by the Ministry of Industry, is a 10-kilometer run designed to promote locally produced items, specifically emphasizing sports apparel and various industrial goods.

The Ministry of Industry announced yesterday that the "Made in Ethiopia" campaign includes a significant element: a 10-kilometer running event under the banner of the "Let Ethiopia Produce" drive. The aim of this activity is to tackle issues facing the manufacturing industry and promote its growth.

At a recent media event, the Chief Spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry, Abeba Tamene, disclosed that the upcoming 10-kilometer road race, which is currently in its third edition, anticipates attracting more than 10,000 runners. These will comprise competitors from different sports clubs along with individuals from the broader community.

She highlighted how this race sets itself apart from other sporting competitions. Unlike many others which emphasize large cash prizes and celebrity athlete involvement, her event aims primarily to showcase Ethiopia’s ability to manufacture top-tier sportswear. Scheduled for April 27, 2017, at Meskel Square, the 10 km run will attract participants from various regions, cities, as well as different sports clubs.

Abeba states that this program is particularly designed to address the challenges encountered by local producers and to vigorously support domestically made industrial products. Additionally, it seeks to strengthen ties among manufacturers with a focus on boosting the profile of locally manufactured sports gear.

Asfaw Dangne, the Competition and Participation Director at the Ethiopian Athletics Federation, stated that 565 athletes hailing from 34 clubs, encompassing participants of all genders, will take part in the event.

He added that the event will offer a significant stage for athletes who might otherwise lack the chance to participate in international competitions.

The organizers have declared substantial rewards for the leading participants: 300,000 Birr for first place, 200,000 Birr for second place, and 100,000 Birr for third place.
