Always Believed in Himself: Yuzvendra Chahal Reflects on Match-Winning Spell in Historic PBKS Victory
Mullanpur (Punjab), India - On April 16 (ANI): Punjab Kings ' (PBKS) leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal once again demonstrated why he continues to be one of the most influential bowlers Indian Premier League (IPL), turning in a match-winning display as PBKS secured a remarkable 16-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders In their defense of the lowest score ever successfully protected in IPL history—111 runs—Punjab dismissed KKR for just 95. Much of this achievement can be attributed to Chahal’s remarkable performance, taking 4 wickets for 28 runs in his four-over spell.
Chahal, who was named Player of the Match, acknowledged the whole team's contribution to their success. However, he emphasized the significance of maintaining a positive mindset when facing a lower score than expected.
Chahal stated following the match, "I believe it was a collective team effort. Our aim was to maintain a positive attitude and secure 2-3 wickets during the powerplay. The pitch wasn’t straightforward; there was also some spin available," according to ESPNcricinfo.
"My initial match was going badly, so Shreyas Iyer suggested adding a slip fielder. Since we needed quick wickets to secure victory with such low scores, we made that change," he explained.
The seasoned spin bowler, whose career has been defined by outwitting batsmen, drew from his vast experience and strategic prowess yet again.
"He maintained unwavering confidence in himself. He constantly considers strategies for getting the batters out," he said.
He mentioned, 'I changed my speed making them exert themselves to hit the ball.'
His intelligent variations in tempo and direction confused the hitters against a delivery that consistently aided spin bowlers throughout.
The incantation not only secured the victory for Punjab Kings However, this also highlighted Chahal's expertise in handling high-pressure situations with finesse. During a match where each run was crucial and the scope for mistakes was extremely limited, his cunning and confidence were particularly evident.
In the game, PBKS secured the win during the coin toss and decided to bat initially. Priyansh Arya (scoring 22 runs off 12 deliveries including four boundaries and one maximum) and Prabhsimran Singh (accumulating 30 runs in 15 balls featuring two fours and three sixes) provided an explosive beginning to PBKS’s innings through their partnership worth 39 runs. Nevertheless, Harshit Rana’s bowling spell (taking 3 wickets for 25 runs) along with impressive fielding efforts from Ramandeep Singh led to them reaching 54/4 once the initial phase concluded. Later on, Sunil Narine (claiming 2 wickets conceding only 14 runs) alongside Varun Chakravarthy (securing 2 wickets giving away just 21 runs) took control over the middle part of the batting order, preventing the PBKS batsmen from settling down before dismissing them entirely for a total score of 111 in 15.3 overs.
During the chase, the PBKS bowlers put up a splendid fight, particularly the spinners. Yuzvendra Chahal (4/28) and Marco Jansen (3/17) who delivered decisive spells that changed the course of the game. Even though Angkrish Raghuvanshi (scoring 37 off 28 balls, including five boundaries and one maximum) and Andre Russell (contributing 17 off 11 balls, featuring a boundary and two sixes) put up a fight, KKR was bowled out for 95 in 15.1 overs, resulting in their defeat by 16 runs.
